Midseason Report Card (top 5) - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)

WatchBlog here again.  You’ve seen WatchBlog’s worst 5, now here’s WatchBlog’s best 5.

5.  Cousin Mose & Me - On Draft Day, Gary “What you talkin’ about Hillis?” Cook waited until the 3rd round to draft a RB, and then drafted 5 in a row.  The 5 RBs could only muster a 5th best rushing attack.  With 2 WRs in his top 3 picks, G Cook has to be disappointed that his receiving rank is 8th overall.  He cannot be disappointed, however, with the play of his QB, which has been phenomenal, and leads the CFFFL in passing.  The Cousin’s special teams rank in the bottom 2 in both categories, but that hasn’t stopped them from winning 4 games.  They’re 5th ranked in WatchBlog’s coach rating, 5th in breakdown ranking, and hold the 5th spot in Yahoo!’s playoff seeding.  No surprise here that WatchBlog has them as the 5th best team in the CFFFL.  Overall midseason grade: C

4.  47ers - The 47ers are only ranked 4th in coaching by WatchBlog, but that rating is based solely on the best use of a team’s roster over the course of the season.  What that ranking does not include is improvements made to a team through post draft acquisitions.  Here, Jerry “Cam Newton for President” Cook has blown the rest of the league out of the water.  He may be ranked 10th in passing, but, because his QB is a running machine, he is ranked number 1 in rushing, and not by just a little.  He is also number 1 in defense, and 5th in receiving and kicking.  Not bad at all for a team that has only gotten 4.02 fantasy points from a drafted QB.  Overall midseason grade: B-

3.  Cute Little Puppies - No doubt WatchBlog’s #3 ranking for the Puppies will be met with controversy, but while the Puppies have been dominant in the first 6 weeks, a glaring weakness has been showing from their bench, or lack thereof.  The Puppies rank 3rd in passing and receiving, 4th in rushing, 2nd in kicking and 5th in defense.  They have also had the benefit of the 4th easiest schedule.  All in all the team has been impressive, however, what is most astounding is their number 1 coach rating, which Stacy “I don’t have any points on my bench, so I can never leave them there” Cook has earned by getting an average of  93% of her possible fantasy points every week.  Once the Puppies get through the BYE weeks, only injuries will stop them from a deep playoff run.  Overall midseason grade: B

2.  Leftovers - The Leftovers are 4-3.  How they’ve lost 3 games is a mystery.  This is the highest scoring team in the league, and their breakdown ranking (how many games they would have won had they played every other team each week) is best in the league.  An unlucky schedule is the only thing that has kept them from a top ranking.  While they only rank 7th in passing, they are 2nd in receiving, 3rd  in rushing and defense, and 4th in kicking.  Cindy “I get everyone’s best game” Cook’s #2 coach rating is also impressive based on earning 88% of her potential points for the season.  Overall midseason grade: A-

1.  Quail Hunters - The Hunters had the number one pick in the CFFFL draft, and they drafted a RB which has missed several games and left them with the 7th best rushing attack.  Where they made up for this was by picking stud WRs who produce great receiving points, and then also playing RBs who also catch a lot of passes.  The result is a league best rank in receiving, and a 6-1 record.  The 3rd best coach rating and the #1 easiest schedule has contributed greatly to their win loss record, and their number 4 ranked passing attack has been just good enough to make them nearly unbeatable week in and week out.  They are 2nd in total points, and 2nd in breakdown ranking.  Match that with a league best record, and WatchBlog had no choice but to anoint them as the best team going in the CFFFL.  Overall midseason grade: A
