Midseason Report Card (top 5) - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)

WatchBlog here again.  You’ve seen WatchBlog’s worst 5, now here’s WatchBlog’s best 5.

5.  Cousin Mose & Me - On Draft Day, Gary “What you talkin’ about Hillis?” Cook waited until the 3rd round to draft a RB, and then drafted 5 in a row.  The 5 RBs could only muster a 5th best rushing attack.  With 2 WRs in his top 3 picks, G Cook has to be disappointed that his receiving rank is 8th overall.  He cannot be disappointed, however, with the play of his QB, which has been phenomenal, and leads the CFFFL in passing.  The Cousin’s special teams rank in the bottom 2 in both categories, but that hasn’t stopped them from winning 4 games.  They’re 5th ranked in WatchBlog’s coach rating, 5th in breakdown ranking, and hold the 5th spot in Yahoo!’s playoff seeding.  No surprise here that WatchBlog has them as the 5th best team in the CFFFL.  Overall midseason grade: C

4.  47ers - The 47ers are only ranked 4th in coaching by WatchBlog, but that rating is based solely on the best use of a team’s roster over the course of the season.  What that ranking does not include is improvements made to a team through post draft acquisitions.  Here, Jerry “Cam Newton for President” Cook has blown the rest of the league out of the water.  He may be ranked 10th in passing, but, because his QB is a running machine, he is ranked number 1 in rushing, and not by just a little.  He is also number 1 in defense, and 5th in receiving and kicking.  Not bad at all for a team that has only gotten 4.02 fantasy points from a drafted QB.  Overall midseason grade: B-

3.  Cute Little Puppies - No doubt WatchBlog’s #3 ranking for the Puppies will be met with controversy, but while the Puppies have been dominant in the first 6 weeks, a glaring weakness has been showing from their bench, or lack thereof.  The Puppies rank 3rd in passing and receiving, 4th in rushing, 2nd in kicking and 5th in defense.  They have also had the benefit of the 4th easiest schedule.  All in all the team has been impressive, however, what is most astounding is their number 1 coach rating, which Stacy “I don’t have any points on my bench, so I can never leave them there” Cook has earned by getting an average of  93% of her possible fantasy points every week.  Once the Puppies get through the BYE weeks, only injuries will stop them from a deep playoff run.  Overall midseason grade: B

2.  Leftovers - The Leftovers are 4-3.  How they’ve lost 3 games is a mystery.  This is the highest scoring team in the league, and their breakdown ranking (how many games they would have won had they played every other team each week) is best in the league.  An unlucky schedule is the only thing that has kept them from a top ranking.  While they only rank 7th in passing, they are 2nd in receiving, 3rd  in rushing and defense, and 4th in kicking.  Cindy “I get everyone’s best game” Cook’s #2 coach rating is also impressive based on earning 88% of her potential points for the season.  Overall midseason grade: A-

1.  Quail Hunters - The Hunters had the number one pick in the CFFFL draft, and they drafted a RB which has missed several games and left them with the 7th best rushing attack.  Where they made up for this was by picking stud WRs who produce great receiving points, and then also playing RBs who also catch a lot of passes.  The result is a league best rank in receiving, and a 6-1 record.  The 3rd best coach rating and the #1 easiest schedule has contributed greatly to their win loss record, and their number 4 ranked passing attack has been just good enough to make them nearly unbeatable week in and week out.  They are 2nd in total points, and 2nd in breakdown ranking.  Match that with a league best record, and WatchBlog had no choice but to anoint them as the best team going in the CFFFL.  Overall midseason grade: A

Midseason Report Card (bottom 5) - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)

WatchBlog here again. The CFFFL regular season is more than halfway over.  Here is the WatchBlog’s Midseason Report Card for the bottom 5 teams, starting with WatchBlog’s worst:

10.  The PlowBoys - It may be surprising that WatchBlog has picked them as the worst CFFFL team through the first half of the season when they have 2 more victories than the Badger, but WatchBlog looks at more than just wins and losses.  Case in point:  As far as fantasy points go, the Boys were 9th in Rushing, and 7th in Receiving, Kicking, and Defense.  The only category the Boys were decent in was passing, and that still only got them a Passing rank of 5th overall.  Add to that the 9th best coach rating in the league, and the numbers quickly point to the PlowBoys as the worst CFFFL team through 7 games.  On a positive note, the team did manage 2 wins, and has recently turned over a pretty pathetic roster.  Let’s see if the second half of the season can be better.  It certainly couldn’t get much worse...  Overall midseason grade: F-

9.  Honey Badger - Why did the Badger escape WatchBlog’s pick as the worst in the CFFFL?  Well, number 1, it was close, but the Badger actually has some pretty decent players, even if Andy “my team slogan says it all” Cook didn’t play many of them in the first 7 games.  That being said the Badger still ranked 6th in Rushing and Passing and 1st and 4th in Kicking and Defense, respectively.  Receiving is a problem for the Badger, as they rank last, but expect the Badger to sneak up on quite a few teams in the second half.  A 10th best coach rating will need to improve, but some actual attention has been paid for a second straight week, so that rating has a chance to improve.  Overall midseason grade: F

8.  Hottez wit da bodiez - Perhaps another surprise in WatchBlog’s midseason report card is that the Hottez are ranked below the Offensives, a team they have more wins than, and a team they’ve already beaten - twice.  However, a closer look at the team shows a strong running game (ranked 2nd) but nothing else.  The Hottez rank 8th or lower in every other fantasy point category, and WatchBlog’s coach rating is also 8th in the CFFFL.  The one thing that can be said in their favor is that they’ve won 3 games even though they’ve played the toughest schedule in the league thus far.  Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.  Overall midseason grade: D-

7.  Easily Offensive - This team has been quite the disappointment as they were one of the odds on favorites to win the league, until they actually started fake playing the games. As of now, they rank 8th in passing and rushing, 6th in receiving, and their only strength thus far has been special teams where they rank 3rd and 2nd in Kicking and Defense.  A mediocre coach rating of 6 hasn’t helped, and neither has the 3rd toughest schedule in the league.  What made WatchBlog give the Offensives the nod over the Hottez was their “breakdown ranking,” which is what WatchBlog refers to what a team’s record would be if they played every other team on every week.  The Offensives had the league’s 6th best breakdown ranking.  Too bad for the Offensives that they have to win the games that are on their actual schedule, which has thus far been pretty rare.  Overall midseason grade: D

6.  The Lions - Speaking of breakdown rankings, the Lions were tied with Hottez for 8th best in the league, but still managed an impressive 4-3 record through 7 games.  A coach rating of 7 was not helpful, but having the 2nd easiest schedule was.  What has saved The Lions thus far has been their QB, as he got them ranked 2nd in the league in passing.  What will kill them going forward is their total lack of a running game, which has them 10th in rushing.  (The Lions were the only CFFFL team to have 0 rushing TDs through 7 games.) Overall midseason grade: C-

Issue 14 - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)

WatchBlog here again.  Well the CFFFL is past the regular season midpoint.  Let’s get to it.

Hunter catches some Puppies

The Cousins went into Monday night needing a miracle 55 point performance from their kicker to avoid their second loss in two weeks.  Instead, their kicker got them a less than miraculous 1.  The Cousins are now in a 4 way tie for the 3rd best record in the league, but still sit at 2nd in the 5CD.  They will have a challenge in week 8 against Lauren “I drafted two cute TEs, but too bad they share a BYE week - oops!” Cook’s Hottez as Gary “Unka-G deserves your best effort” Cook will be without standout QB Aaron Rodgers.  Meanwhile, the Hunters have a razor thin overall point advantage over the Puppies, and will have to continue to win and score big points to stay ranked number 1 in the CFFFL.  While the Hunters draw the 9th ranked PlowBoys in week 8, they will face them without stud RB Matt Forte.  If new PlowBoys’ RB DeMarco Murray puts up another stellar performance like he did in week 7, Amanda “I made BYE week adjustments for nothing?”Cook’s stay atop the CFFFL might be short lived.

What do you mean no Stat Corrections for week 7?

Whenever a CFFFL game is won by only a couple of points, WatchBlog eagerly awaits the stat corrections to see if a CFFFL team will be robbed of the victory by a statistician.  While stat corrections have been made every week but one going into week 7, it appears none are coming, and the 47ers’ 1.32 point victory over the Leftovers will stand.  The victory creates a logjam for the 3rd best record in the CFFFL between 4 teams, including the 47ers and Leftovers.  Despite the 4-3 record, the Leftovers are the highest scoring team in the league, and will be favored to hand the Puppies their 2nd loss in a row when those two teams face off again in week 8.  Stacy “explain how to ‘lose’ to me” Cook is reportedly seeking a to hire a loser tutor.  As for the 47ers, their slim victory is their 3rd win in a row, and makes them the 2nd hottest team in the CFFFL behind the Hunters.   The win also improved their ranking to 4th, as they passed the Cousins due to a higher point total.  Week 8 matches them up against Easily Offensive, which has been Easily Beatable by everyone in the league not related to some named Mose.

Mid-Season Report Card

As the CFFFL is more than halfway through the regular season, it is time for the WatchBlog Mid-Season Report Card.  Look for it in the coming days.

Issue 13 - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)

WatchBlog here again.  3 early games are final.  Let’s get to it.

Nothing’s more Offensive than a Ginger Hater

Just as the Offensives have had the Cousins’ number in this CFFFL season, the Hottez have been just as dominant over the Offensives and are now 2 and 0 against them.  It was only the Hottez’s 3rd win of the season, but it was important as it means they will jump to 7th in the CFFFL, 1 spot from the playoffs.  Lauren “McGee sounds like a redhead’s name” Cook seemed unstable in her pre-game comments, and said her key roster moves were motivated by “all that smack talk” from this blogger.  Offensives’ manager David “I really wish this WatchBlog character would shut the McGahee up...” Cook could not be reached for comment.

DeMarco!  Polo!

One of the most dominating running performances of the day was seen from the PlowBoys’ bench in newly added DeMarco Murray.  Luckily for the PlowBoys, the 31+ point performance by Murray was not needed to pull out a win over the newly constituted Honey Badger.  The Badger may crawl back into his hole after his effort to field a complete week 7 team was met with the customary Badger loss.  The win means the PlowBoys will stay one place out of last, and ahead of Andy “I stopped studying for midterms for this?” Cook’s Honey Badger, who will remain the only winless CFFFL team for yet another week.

Cute Little Lions

The Lions scored 82.34 points in week 4 against the Cute Little Puppies, and lost by over 21 points.  By contrast, in week 7, the Lions only scored 78.20 points, but this time beat the Cute Little Puppies by over 26.  The Puppies had by far their worst offensive point output of the year, and were actually the lowest scoring team of the weekend.  Not only did the loss knock the Puppies from the throne of the unbeatens, but it will also knock them down to the 2nd ranked CFFFL team behind the Quail Hunters (barring a unprecedented 55 point kicking performance by Billy Cundiff in the ongoing Hunters’ game.)  Stacy “I don’t think fantasy football is fun anymore” Cook blamed the loss on injuries, and is reportedly looking for a badger hole to crawl into.

Special Edition 4 - 2011

(WatchBlog McGee is a fictionalized blogger but reports on actual, flesh and bone, real-life fantasy football leagues.  This year, he is embedded deep in the CFFFL, and will be periodically blogging on league matters.)
WatchBlog here again.  “Special Edition” loses a lot of meaning when I have one every week, but the pre-game news just keeps flowing at an alarming rate.  Let’s get to it.

Bit-O-Honey

It was bound to happen.  7 weeks into the CFFFL season, and finally it did.  The Honey Badger actually came out of his hole, and didn’t see his shadow (or maybe he did, who knows?) but regardless, he came out long enough to actually make a couple of roster moves, and is fielding a complete team for the first time since week 4.  This is bad news for the PlowBoys, as they were poised to win their second game of the year against the only team ranked behind them.  Instead, the Boys will have to pull off an upset to win, and if they don’t they will slip to the last ranked team going into the last half of the (likely last) CFFFL regular season.

Bit-O-Hottez

In other shocking CFFFL developments, Lauren “I also have a job where I can write long rambling posts about stupid fantasy football” Cook also adjusted her week 7 roster and, as a result, finds her team favored to win their 3rd game overall, and second against fellow CFFFL bottom feeder, Easily Offensive.  The Hottez wit da bodiez manager released a statement coinciding with the moves in which she confusingly referenced unknown red head Will Barker (WatchBlog could find no such player listed in the CFFFL database,) made several remarks of Ginger hatred, and then attributed her new found interest in CFFFL matters to an upcoming game against this blogger, rather than her actual opponent, the Offensives.  It is unclear whether some sort of nasal ingestion of glue or other adhesive was involved prior to the “press release,” but if it were the case, this type of behavior might explain the Hottez draft strategy...

Bit-O-Commish

The question remains: Why?  Inside reports strongly suggest that Commissioner Gary “That’s my chair” Cook has been heavy handed in the past with other teams, and was doubly so this week with the Badger, in an effort to “encourage” participation.  The question of why such force was applied going into week 7, and was not applied on the Badger in weeks 5 or 6 raises some serious questions as to the Commish agenda.  It is obvious that the team hurt most by the strong arming of the Badger is the PlowBoys, a team which seems to need no help in losing on a weekly basis.  Some CFFFL sources have whispered that the Commish holds a deep grudge against PlowBoys manager Norman “this week of all weeks, Badger?  Really?” Cook for an incident that could only be described as “The forced shared bedroom debacle.”  WatchBlog could not get anyone to elaborate on the incident, but he will continue to follow this story...
