WatchBlog here. We finally had some games that count. Let's get to it.
Battle of the Bottom
The two worst rated teams in the league got to face off against each other in week 1 of the CFFFL, and as a result, one of them had to win. Not surprisingly, the Honey Badger, who didn't even name starters until they were already down by 35 points, never really challenged the newcomer Gamers in their first ever CFFFL game. In 2011, the Badger did not win a single game until week 8, and only broke the century mark in points scored once all season. With The Gamers scoring a very respectable 96 points in their first outing, the Badger was gonna have to buck some serious historical trends to come a way with a victory. Did they? Not a bucking chance. Andrew "No matter how much I lose, at least I'm still tall" Cook knew his team was doomed to failure when his highest point contributor for the day was his kicker. (WatchBlog Helpful Hint: Having a kicker as your highest scorer is NEVER a good thing.) In contrast, the much maligned Gamers ignored the criticism, and smartly benched their 1st round draft pick, QB Jay Cutler, and instead started QB Tony Romo, a nice pickup in the 4th round. While the 7 points they gained from the move weren't needed for the win, Durlon "Not only am I tall, I have an awesome goatee" Bryant showed the courage to make the tough roster calls, and is a definite candidate to win best manager of week 1 based on a highly optimized lineup. Said Bryant of his team's surprisingly successful start: "Woot!" He's even efficient in his trash talk.
Battle of the Top
At the other end of the spectrum, this week also saw two teams from WatchBlog's top 6 face off when the other newbie CFFFL team battled the playoff tested Hottez wit da bodiez for an early leg up in potential 2012 playoff positioning. While the results aren't officially final until tomorrow, the Hottez have basically thrown in the towel through suspect roster moves. While the Suger Gliders were efficient in playing an optimized roster, the Hottez went against conventional wisdom, or any detectable wisdom at all for that matter, and opted to play reserves at practically every position but TE. If they weren't reserves, they should have been, as their benched counterparts put up almost 60 points that, unfortunately for the Hottez, didn't count. Since you can only win with points that count, the Hottez will begin 2012 just as they began 2011: 0-1. Lauren "I have a new non-hotness based strategy this year" Cook will need to possibly put aside her aversion to dog abusers, and other distasteful starters on her team in the future if she hopes to make a return appearance in the CFFFL post-season. The Sugar Gliders, led by Shoshana "I'm good at everything, so why should this be any different" Cook will also battle for the title of best week 1 manager, which puts the rest of the CFFFL on notice that having very little experience managing in the CFFFL isn't necessarily a bad thing...
Battle of the... Middle?
Take one of the best of the 2011 CFFFL teams, with one of the best drafts from 2012, and then put them up against one of the worst CFFFL teams from 2011, with one of the worst 2012 drafts, and what do you think you'll get? If you said "Blowout" then you like guessing the obvious, and you are also right. MotherBoy (formerly known as Cousin Mose & Me) had great success in 2011, and eventually played in that year's CFFFL Super Bowl, but the one thing they couldn't accomplish was a victory over the pathetic cellar dwelling team - Easily Offensive, going 0-2 against them. Well, it appears that 3rd time's a charm, and an impressive charm at that, as MotherBoy has put up a league high point total of 126 points to start off the season with a bang. While 5 teams are still playing, not one of them is currently within 25 points of that total, and none of them are likely to surpass it, especially the struggling Offensives. David "I'm down by 21 in my other league, and I actually feel good about that" Cook will need 72 points from his 2 remaining players just to tie MotherBoy, and that is about as likely as a grown man and his mother winning a mother and son dance competition intended for little boys.
More to come as all the games go final tomorrow. WatchBlog out.
